Today, in honor of Columbus day, my Norwegian professor baked cookies shaped like viking ships. The Viking settlement L'anse aux Meadows, discovered in 1963 by the Norwegian explorer Helge Ingstad and his wife, proved that the first non-native people to settle in North American were the Norse explorers (who arrived about 500 years before Columbus).

On Sunday, a group of my fellow housemates and I headed out for a day trip to an Indiana apple orchard. After sampling all the different varieties they had (of which we liked the Jubilee Fuji, Gala, Keepsake, and Shizuka) we braved the cold, munching on apple donuts and hot apple cider while we browsed the pumpkin patch.

Mondays are the best days to do laundry. Shefali and I had our pick of the washers and dryers, sans the threat of machine poachers. As we waited for our wash, I knit and she worked on Hindi homework.
